A variety of breaks within easy reach

Rote is often called “the Bali of 30 years ago.” Whether you are looking for a 400-meter carving wall or a hollow, heart-racing right, the reefs surrounding Belar Reef offer something for every level of surfer.

The Main Breaks

T-Land is the crown jewel of Rote and one of the longest left-hand waves in Indonesia. Breaking directly in front of our bungalows, it offers multiple sections—The Peak, The Pyramid, and The Mountain—meaning the crowd spreads out across the reef. On a good swell, you can expect rides of up to 400 meters.

  • Best Tide: All tides (hollower at low, fatter at high).
  • Best Wind: E-SE Trades.
  • Type: Left Reef Break

Located on the northern side of the Nemberala channel, The Bommie is a short, punchy right-hander. It’s a great alternative when the swell is large, offering a fast take-off and a deep-water finish.

  • Best Tide: Low to Mid tide.
  • Best Wind: E-SE Trades.
  • Type: Right Reef Break

True to its name, this is the spot where you’ll hear the “squeals” of delight from those catching their first Indonesian waves. Located near the harbor, it’s a much softer, more forgiving wave that breaks over deeper reef. Perfect for longboards and those finding their feet.

  • Best Tide: Mid to High tide.
  • Type: Left & Right Reef

Exploring Further Afield

A 10-minute boat or scooter trip south brings you to Boa. This is a powerful, world-class right that requires a bit more finesse. It’s known for a fast, hollow take-off and a heavy barrel section. Best surfed early in the morning before the trades kick in.

  • Best Tide: Mid tide.
  • Type: Right Reef Break

Accessible only by boat, Suckies is a short, intense, and incredibly hollow right. It’s one of the most powerful waves on the island and often completely empty. If you’re looking for a tube, this is your spot.

  • Best Tide: Mid to High tide.
  • Type: Right Reef Break

Located off a small uninhabited island, Do’o offers a mechanical right-hander that wraps around the reef. It’s a scenic 20-minute boat ride from Belar Reef and offers a remote “middle-of-the-ocean” feel.

  • Type: Right Reef Break

Best Time to Visit

The main surf season runs from March to November, peaking in May to September when the Indian Ocean sends consistent SW swells and the SE trade winds blow perfectly offshore for T-Land.
